Australian visa application preparation checklist
Australian visa applications are processed by the Department of Home Affairs. Each visa subclass has its own criteria and required documents. This checklist covers the standard preparation steps for most visa types.
This is a 12-step preparation checklist for Australian visa applications under the Migration Act 1958. It covers the standard intake, document gathering, and submission steps. Adapt for the specific visa subclass and applicant circumstances.
The checklist
Identify the correct visa subclass
Determine the appropriate visa subclass based on the client's circumstances and intent. Common categories: skilled, family, business, partner, student.
Verify eligibility
Check the client meets the criteria for the chosen visa subclass — age, English, qualifications, health, character.
Take detailed instructions
Cover the client's background, current circumstances, intentions, and any concerns. Document everything in writing.
Identify any character issues
Check for any criminal history, prior visa cancellations, or character concerns under section 501 of the Migration Act.
Identify any health issues
Identify any health conditions that may affect the health requirement. Consider the cost threshold for the public hospital system.
Gather identity documents
Passport, birth certificate, marriage certificate (if applicable), and any name change documents.
Gather supporting evidence
Employment records, qualifications, English test results, financial documents, family relationship evidence — depending on the visa.
Obtain police clearances
Obtain police clearances from every country the applicant has lived in for 12 months or more in the last 10 years.
Arrange health examinations
Arrange health examinations with a panel physician at the time required by the visa subclass.
Draft the application
Complete the visa application form (typically online via ImmiAccount). Address all required fields.
Pay the visa application charge
Pay the visa application charge and any subsequent charges. Fees are non-refundable.
Lodge and respond to requests
Lodge the application via ImmiAccount. Monitor for any Department requests for further information and respond within the timeframe.
When this checklist applies
Use this checklist on every visa application matter. Each visa subclass will require additional specific documents — adapt accordingly.
