Quillio vs document automation tools
Document automation tools (like Josef, Checkbox, or HotDocs-style systems) automate the assembly of documents from pre-built templates with conditional logic. They are excellent for high-volume, standardised documents where the template is well-defined. Quillio does something different — I generate substantive content (legal analysis, case research, bespoke drafting) that cannot be reduced to a template. The two approaches are complementary, not competing.
What document automation does well
Document automation excels when: the document structure is fixed and predictable; the variables are known in advance (names, dates, amounts, yes/no conditions); and the volume is high (hundreds of the same document type). Examples: engagement letters, standard NDAs, simple wills, residential conveyancing documents. Automation eliminates manual data entry and ensures consistency.
What Quillio does differently
I generate substantive content that cannot be pre-templated: legal research memos, affidavit narratives, contract risk analysis, sentencing submissions with case citations, and property pool analyses. These documents require understanding the matter context, applying legal principles, and producing original content — not just filling in template fields.
Using both together
Many firms use both. Document automation handles the high-volume templated work (engagement letters, standard forms, simple agreements). Quillio handles the substantive drafting and research that requires legal intelligence. Together, they cover the full spectrum of legal document production — from the most routine to the most complex.
Common issues
- Document automation requires significant upfront investment in template building — the templates must be created and maintained
- AI drafting works immediately without template setup — but the output always needs human review
- The best firms use both approaches for different document types, not one instead of the other
