AI Legal Research Demo
This is a free sandbox that lets Australian lawyers try AI-assisted legal research on prepared example questions across family, commercial, and property law. Each answer returns pinpoint citations to AustLII-referenced cases and flags where the model is uncertain — so you can assess the workflow before trusting it on a real matter.
What this tool does
Most AI legal research demos either show cherry-picked outputs or send your query to a US-hosted chatbot with no regard for Australian source law. This demo runs against a small, curated set of Commonwealth and state authorities so you can inspect exactly what AI returns, how it cites, and where it admits it does not know.
How to use it
- Pick one of the prepared example questions, or write your own in plain English
- Select a jurisdiction (Commonwealth, NSW, VIC, QLD) to scope the sources
- Read the AI answer, then click any citation to see the passage in context
- Review the "confidence notes" panel to see where the model flagged uncertainty
- Compare the AI answer against your own reasoning before relying on it
What you'll learn
- What an AI legal research answer actually looks like with pinpoint AU citations
- How purpose-built legal AI differs from general chatbots on case law tasks
- Where current AI models are reliable, and where they still need human checking
- What "grounded" and "ungrounded" answers look like side by side

Is this running the real Quillio research engine?
It runs a scoped demo version against a curated set of Australian authorities. The full platform searches a much broader corpus including AustLII, JADE-indexed material, and your own firm knowledge.
Will it hallucinate cases?
The demo is configured to answer only from the curated source set. If you ask something outside that set, it returns "I do not have a confident answer" rather than inventing a citation — which is the pattern we want the full product to default to.
Can I use the demo answers in a real matter?
No. The demo is for evaluating the workflow, not for use on live client work. Any real research must be verified against primary sources and is your professional responsibility under the relevant conduct rules.
Why is jurisdiction selection important?
Australian case law is a mix of Commonwealth and state authority. Scoping to the right jurisdiction avoids the common AI failure of citing a NSW Supreme Court decision to a Victorian question, or vice versa.
Does the demo store my queries?
Queries are logged only to improve the demo itself — not attached to your account, not used to train general models, and not shared with third parties. No client data should be entered.
How is this different from ChatGPT?
ChatGPT answers from a general-purpose model with no grounded access to AU primary law and a well-documented tendency to invent citations. This demo answers from a restricted source set with pinpoint citations to verifiable AU authorities.
What happens when the AI is uncertain?
Instead of producing a confident but wrong answer, the demo returns a short explanation of what it is unsure about — for example, "the most recent case I have access to on this point is from 2022; there may be later authority I cannot see."
Test the savings on your own work
Once the demo shows you the shape of AI-assisted research, the free Quillio trial is where you see it run across the full AU corpus on your own questions. The demo proves the pattern; the trial proves the fit.
This demo is for evaluation only. Outputs must not be relied upon for live legal work. All AI-assisted research remains subject to the practitioner's professional duty of verification under the relevant state or territory legal profession rules.
