AI Readiness Assessment for Law Firms
This is a free 20-question self-assessment for Australian law firms considering or scaling AI adoption. It scores your firm across five dimensions — data maturity, security and privacy, governance, workflow integration, and change readiness — and gives a concrete next-step plan.
What this tool does
Most firms know they need an AI strategy but struggle to find a neutral starting point. This assessment is structured around the Law Society of NSW guidance on generative AI, the LIV AI professional obligations note, and practical patterns we have seen across 200+ AU firm evaluations — so the score reflects real adoption readiness, not marketing checkboxes.
How to use it
- Answer 20 questions across the five dimensions — takes about 12 minutes
- Review your scores and the overall readiness tier (Exploring, Piloting, Deploying, or Scaling)
- Read the recommended next-step plan tailored to your tier
- Share the PDF result with your managing partner, CIO, or risk partner
- Optional: book a 30-minute session with a Quillio strategist to discuss the result
What you'll learn
- Your firm's readiness tier across data, security, governance, workflow, and change
- The specific gaps most likely to block or derail AI adoption in the next 12 months
- A concrete three to five step action plan tailored to your tier
- How your firm benchmarks against others of similar size and practice mix

Who should complete this assessment?
Ideally the managing partner, the IT or operations lead, and the risk or compliance partner together. Completing it alone from one perspective tends to produce a skewed result — the value comes from the conversation between those three roles.
How long does it take?
About 12 minutes for a single person, or 30-45 minutes if run as a workshop conversation. We recommend the workshop approach for firms above 20 lawyers.
Does it address Australian-specific obligations?
Yes. The assessment references the Law Society of NSW guidance, the Law Institute of Victoria AI note, Queensland Law Society guidance, the Privacy Act, and the Australian Solicitors' Conduct Rules obligations that apply to AI use.
What if we are not ready to adopt AI yet?
That is a valid outcome. Some firms score in the "Exploring" tier and the recommended plan is specifically about the pre-adoption foundations — data hygiene, conflicts process, and partner alignment — before piloting anything.
Is the result confidential?
Yes. Answers are processed in your browser and submitted only if you explicitly request the PDF result be emailed. No firm identification is required to complete the assessment.
How does this relate to Law Council AI guidance?
The assessment maps to the Law Council of Australia's published guidance on AI and the related state-level notes. Where guidance is still evolving, the assessment flags the relevant area and notes it as a watching brief.
Can a single practitioner complete it?
Yes — the sole practitioner version collapses the governance and change dimensions since they are effectively one person's call. The core data, security, and workflow questions still apply.
Test the savings on your own work
If the assessment shows your firm is ready to pilot, the Quillio free trial is the lowest-friction way to run that pilot. No credit card, AU-hosted, and the trial covers the three workflows (research, document review, drafting) where most firms see ROI first.
This assessment is a self-diagnostic aid, not a formal audit or compliance certification. Regulatory guidance on AI in legal practice is evolving — always check the current position of your state regulator and the Law Council of Australia before finalising an AI policy.
