About

What this tool does

Incomplete document production is a leading cause of adjournments, cost orders, and client frustration. Every matter type has a predictable set of documents needed at each stage, yet most firms rely on memory or outdated precedent lists. This tool gives you a current, jurisdiction-aware checklist so nothing falls through the cracks.

How to use it

  1. Select the matter type (litigation, conveyancing, family, estate, commercial, criminal)
  2. Choose the jurisdiction (state or territory)
  3. Indicate the current stage of the matter (intake, pre-action, discovery, hearing, settlement, etc.)
  4. Review the generated checklist — required documents are distinguished from recommended ones
  5. Download or print the checklist and add matter-specific items as needed

What you'll learn

  • Which documents are required at each stage of your matter type
  • Filing deadlines and formatting requirements for key documents
  • Common omissions that lead to adjournments or adverse cost orders
  • How document requirements differ between jurisdictions for the same matter type

Questions

Tool FAQs

What matter types are supported?

The tool covers civil litigation (all courts), conveyancing (residential and commercial), family law (property and parenting), estate administration, commercial transactions, and summary criminal matters. Specialist areas like maritime and native title are not currently included.

Are the checklists jurisdiction-specific?

Yes. Document requirements, filing rules, and formatting standards are tailored to the selected state or territory. Federal court requirements are shown separately.

Can I customise the checklist?

The generated checklist can be downloaded as a PDF or CSV. You can add, remove, or reorder items to suit your matter. The tool provides the baseline; you tailor it to the facts.

How are the checklists maintained?

Checklists are reviewed when court practice notes, rules, or legislation change. The last-reviewed date is shown against each matter type and jurisdiction.

Does it include precedent documents?

No. The tool lists the documents you need — it does not provide templates or precedents. For precedent generation, see Quillio's document drafting features in the free trial.

Can I share the checklist with my client?

Yes. The client-facing view strips out internal practice notes and shows only the documents the client needs to provide, with plain-language descriptions of each.
