Firm Profitability Calculator
This free calculator helps law firm principals and partners understand profitability at the firm, practice group, and fee-earner level. Enter your revenue, headcount, and overhead data to see profit per partner, profit margin by matter type, and how your numbers compare to published Australian law firm benchmarks.
What this tool does
Many Australian firms track revenue but not true profitability — the number that accounts for overheads, write-offs, and utilisation. Without that number, pricing decisions are guesswork. This calculator breaks profitability down to the level where it becomes actionable: per partner, per matter type, and per fee earner.
How to use it
- Enter total firm revenue and number of equity partners
- Add total overhead costs (rent, salaries, insurance, technology, etc.)
- Break down revenue by matter type or practice group if you want per-group analysis
- Enter fee-earner headcount and average utilisation rate
- Review your profit per partner, margin by matter type, and benchmark comparisons
What you'll learn
- Your firm's profit per equity partner and how it compares to Australian benchmarks
- Which matter types or practice groups are most and least profitable
- How utilisation rate and write-off percentage affect your bottom line
- Where targeted improvements in pricing or efficiency would have the biggest impact

Where do the benchmarks come from?
Benchmarks are drawn from published Australian law firm surveys including the Australasian Legal Practice Management Association (ALPMA) and state Law Society reports. The tool cites the source and year for each benchmark.
Is my financial data stored?
No. All calculations run in your browser. Your inputs are not transmitted to any server and are not stored or logged.
What firm sizes are the benchmarks relevant to?
The benchmarks cover sole practitioners through to mid-tier firms (up to approximately 50 partners). Large national and international firms have different cost structures and are not directly comparable.
Does it account for fixed-fee vs time-based billing?
Yes. You can enter revenue by billing model, and the calculator adjusts the utilisation and write-off assumptions accordingly.
Can I share the results with my partners?
Yes. The results page generates a shareable link with your inputs encoded as parameters. No financial data is transmitted — only the inputs you entered.
How is profit per equity partner calculated?
Total revenue minus total overheads (including employed solicitor salaries), divided by the number of equity partners. The tool shows the calculation transparently so you can verify the inputs.
