How to export the audit trail for compliance

Quick answer

To export the audit trail, a firm administrator opens the audit log, filters by date range, user, or matter, and exports to CSV. The log captures every document upload, query, output, share, and delete, with user, timestamp, and IP address. It is designed for compliance reviews, professional standards audits, and information security reviews.

What the audit trail captures

Every action in Quillio is logged: logins, document uploads, queries, outputs, shares (including who received a share link and when they accessed it), edits, and deletes. Each entry records the user, the timestamp, the IP address, and the matter. Nothing material is missing from the log — this is the record of what happened.

Filtering and export

Filter the audit log by date range, user, matter, or action type, then export to CSV. Typical exports are monthly for professional standards review or on-demand for specific audits (for example, a request from your professional indemnity insurer or the Law Society).

Retention

Audit trail entries are retained for seven years by default, in line with typical law firm record-keeping requirements. Firms on a custom plan can extend retention if their regulatory obligations require it.

Step-by-step
  1. Open the audit log. A firm administrator opens "Firm settings" and selects "Audit log".
  2. Apply filters. Filter by date range, user, matter, or action type.
  3. Export to CSV. Click "Export" and save the CSV.
  4. Share with the auditor. Send the CSV to the auditor via your firm's secure channel.
Common issues
  • Only firm administrators can access the full audit log — individual users see only their own actions
  • Very large date ranges may take a few minutes to export — narrow the filter if possible
  • Deleted documents remain in the audit log even after removal from the matter
