How to set the default jurisdiction in Quillio

Quick answer

To set the default jurisdiction, open "Firm settings" → "Preferences" → "Default jurisdiction" and choose a State or Territory. Every new matter starts with that jurisdiction applied, which means I apply the correct State or Territory Acts and court rules from the outset. Individual users can override the default on their own matters or at firm level.

Why default jurisdiction matters

Jurisdiction controls which Acts I apply — a conveyance in NSW runs against the Conveyancing Act 1919 (NSW), in Victoria against the Sale of Land Act 1962 (VIC). Setting the right default reduces the chance a matter runs under the wrong framework by accident.

Per-user override

Individual users (for example, a lawyer in a national firm working mostly in Queensland) can set their personal default to QLD even though the firm default is NSW. This is useful in multi-State firms.

Per-matter override

Every matter can override the default at creation time. Cross-border matters (for example, a Federal Court matter involving parties from multiple States) can be set to "Commonwealth" or to a specific State.

Step-by-step
  1. Open Firm settings. Click your initials → "Firm settings".
  2. Open Preferences. Left navigation → Preferences.
  3. Set default jurisdiction. Choose the State or Territory.
  4. Optional: set per-user defaults. Users can override in their own preferences.
Common issues
  • Federal matters (for example, FCFCOA, Federal Court) should be set to "Commonwealth" regardless of firm location
  • Users moving between States should set their personal default rather than rely on firm default
  • Getting the jurisdiction wrong does not cause an error — it just means I apply the wrong default law. Always confirm per matter.
