How to set matter-level permissions in Quillio
To set matter-level permissions, open the matter, click "Permissions" in the matter settings, and choose who can see and edit the matter. You can set ethical walls so specific colleagues cannot access a matter at all, even if they are firm administrators. Matter-level permissions are enforced in search, filing, and audit logs.
Access levels
There are three access levels per person — View (read-only), Contribute (upload, run workflows, edit outputs), and Manage (everything Contribute plus permissions). You set these per matter.
Ethical walls
An ethical wall excludes specific people from the matter entirely. They do not see the matter in search, in lists, or in audit logs accessible to them. Administrators can still audit at firm level, but they cannot access the matter's content without breaking the wall.
Client consent
Some matter types require express client consent before sharing beyond the engagement team — particularly sensitive personal, family, and criminal matters. I flag matter types where this applies and prompt you to confirm consent.
Step-by-step
- Open the matter settings. Click the gear icon on the matter.
- Open Permissions. In the settings side menu.
- Configure. Add people and access levels, or set up ethical walls.
- Audit. Check the audit log to confirm permissions are enforced.
Common issues
- Ethical walls must be set before any conflicted person accesses the matter — retroactive walls do not cure earlier access
- Administrators can see every matter by default — set ethical walls explicitly where needed
- Client consent should be documented in the matter file — I prompt for it
